Geothermal Forum: Managing Lost Circulation in Geothermal Well for Effectiveness Drilling Practice

The Master’s Program in Geothermal Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), held the Geothermal Forum Webinar Series 2022 with the topic “Managing Lost Circulation in Geothermal Well for Effectiveness Drilling Practice.”

Lost circulation is a common and critical issue encountered during geothermal drilling operations. It occurs when drilling fluid flows into natural fissures, fractures, or caverns, resulting in a partial or total loss of fluid return. Such losses can significantly impact drilling efficiency, wellbore stability, and operational costs.

The session featured Budi Setiawan, Ingria Yunandra M. Arrsay, and Yudi Hartono as speakers, and was moderated by Prof. Rudi Rubiandini. The speakers discussed various types of lost circulation—ranging from seepage to catastrophic losses—and practical strategies to mitigate these issues through improved drilling techniques and material selection.

The forum was conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join both onsite at ITB and online via Zoom and YouTube. It attracted professionals, researchers, and students interested in geothermal drilling technology and best practices.
