Field Excursion to Tangkuban Parahu: Understanding Geothermal Systems in the Field

Friday, October 10, 2025 — Students of the Geothermal Engineering Study Program at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) who are enrolled in the PB5004 Geothermal Systems and Technology course conducted a field excursion to the Tangkuban Parahu area.
The activity was supervised by Dr. Eng. Ir. Suryantini, the course instructor, and accompanied by teaching assistants. The field sites visited included Maribaya, Kancah/Curug Cipanas, Kawah Domas, and Kawah Ratu.
This excursion aimed to provide students with direct experience in understanding geothermal systems, particularly during the early stages of geothermal exploration. Through this activity, students were expected to:
-
Recognize various field activities carried out in the early phase of geothermal exploration.
-
Understand how the concept of a Volcanic Hydrothermal System in high terrain areas can be interpreted through geothermal surface manifestations.
-
Learn how key questions about geothermal systems can be addressed through the interpretation of preliminary exploration data.
This field excursion is an essential part of experiential learning within the ITB Geothermal Engineering Program, designed to strengthen students’ understanding of geothermal systems and exploration processes in Indonesia.
