IIGW and Field Work Activities in Bali Strengthen Geothermal Collaboration between Kyoto University and ITB
Kyoto University and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) successfully conducted a series of “IIGW and Field Work: Bali, Indonesia” activities from 10–15 June 2024, funded by the JICA KIZUNA Program. The program combined academic sessions and field-based learning to strengthen international collaboration and enhance participants’ understanding of geothermal systems in Indonesia.
The activities began on 10 June 2024 with keynote presentations, a plenary session, and a gala dinner. The plenary session focused on Innovative Geothermal Technology to Optimize Geothermal Utilization, highlighting recent advancements and strategic approaches in geothermal development.
On 11 June 2024, the program continued with technical sessions covering exploration, geochemistry, reservoir, and production, providing an integrated perspective on geothermal system evaluation and development.
The third day, 12 June 2024, featured a geological excursion to Uluwatu, where participants observed uplifted tertiary limestone formed by subduction processes along the Bukit Peninsula cliffs. The visit also included Uluwatu Temple, offering insights into the cultural and historical context of the region.
Fieldwork activities were conducted on 13 June 2024 at the Bedugul Geothermal Field, including visits to wells BEL-01, BEL-02, and BEL-03, a tour of the PT Bali Energy Ltd. warehouse, and sampling of geothermal manifestations at the upflow area in Pura Teratai Bang and the outflow area at the Angseri hot spring. The following day, 14 June 2024, the field program continued at the Batur Mount, followed by a visit to the Batur Natural Hot Spring.
The final day, 15 June 2024, included visits to Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park and Pandawa Beach, where participants learned about the geological landscape characterized by massive quarried limestone formations and distinctive coastal geomorphology.
Participants from Kyoto University included Prof. Katsuaki Koike, Kashiwaya Sensei, and Taiki Kubo Sensei. The program also involved Heru Berian Pratama (Kyoto–ITB collaboration), Taufiq Rachman from Institut Teknologi Bandung, and Dirgo Rahayu from PT Bali Energy Ltd., who actively contributed to the academic discussions and fieldwork activities.
Through this integrated academic and field-based program, Kyoto University and ITB strengthened international cooperation while providing valuable practical experience in geothermal exploration and geological interpretation within Indonesia’s geothermal prospects.
