Geothermal Forum: Mitigate Silica Scaling in Brine ORC, Case Study: Sorik Marapi and Sokoria Geothermal Fields

The Master’s Program in Geothermal Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), successfully organized another session of the Geothermal Forum Webinar Series 2022 with the topic “Mitigate Silica Scaling in Brine ORC, Case Study: Sorik Marapi and Sokoria Geothermal Fields.”

Silica scaling is a common challenge in geothermal power plants, particularly in Brine Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems. The utilization of Brine ORC reduces fluid temperature, which often leads to silica oversaturation at the ORC outlet. This oversaturation can cause fouling in heat exchangers, reduce injection capacity, and decrease overall energy recovery efficiency.

In this forum, Ryan Hidayat and Radhitya Pradipta shared their experiences and insights on successful silica scaling mitigation strategies applied in the Sorik Marapi and Sokoria Geothermal Fields. The session was moderated by Grandy Danakusumah and attracted participants from academia, industry, and geothermal practitioners.

Held online via Zoom and YouTube, the discussion provided valuable lessons on effective scaling control methods, operational improvements, and field-proven solutions to enhance geothermal system reliability.
